Whether you're ready or not - "it's 2022 and Psy is coming back", with his brand new single - 'That That', produced by and featuring SUGA from BTS. It's been a decade since the South Korean rapper exploded onto the international scene with his mega hit - 'Gangnam Style' and he's ready to make his come back.
'Gangnam Style', still one of the most watched videos on YouTube with 4.4 Billion views, set records with it's infectious beat and it's viral dance craze. It went to number one all over the world, outselling everyone else by a country mile. As well as topping out the charts in it's native South Korea, PSY's 'Gangnam Style' also reached number one in Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Russia and the UK (Among many others). PSY narrowly missed out on a number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. but did win the Billboard Award for 'Top Streaming Song' and the MTV award for best video.
Ten years on from that incredible, largely unpredictable, success and "PSY is coming back" as he announces at the start of his new video. 'That That', one of numerous collaborations that make up PSY's new 12 track album - 'PSY 9th', was produced by fellow K-Pop sensation SUGA of BTS. SUGA, one of the seven members of boy band BTS, hit PSY up with the idea to collaborate. PSY says that - "One day, I got a text message from an unknown number...It said, ‘Hi, this is Suga. I’d like to talk to you about something.’ So we met up.”
Talking about their joint project PSY went on to say - "[Suga] is a great performer, of course, but he’s also really good at writing music...He’s produced songs for IU and Heize before. So he’d produced lots of songs for other stars before, and he told me that he wanted to top off his producing project by giving me a song. That’s when he brought me the instrumental for ‘That That’...Suga’s the one who produced that beat. He asked me, ‘Could you possibly sing this song?’ and I said, ‘It wouldn’t even have to be this. What wouldn’t I be willing to sing? I’m in!'"
PSY concluded by saying - "So we kept talking back and forth like this and working on the song together, and he wound up featuring on the song. I’d really like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to him."
'That That' is currently on 73 Million views so has some way to go before it surpasses 'Gangnam Style'...but you never know, stranger things have been known to happen.
